MercyMe has had an incredible impact on thousands of lives through their work in the Christian music industry. Starting back in 1994, the band didn't have a clue how God was going to use them to inspire and encourage people all over the world with their worship songs. MercyMe has even been able to have an influence on people who claim not to have a religion by having some of their hit songs be played on mainstream stations. God can work incredible miracles if you just give him your hearts and your talents-MercyMe is a testimony to that.
Even though they weren't really truly appreciated for their work until after their smash hit, "I Can Only Imagine" in 2001. Their Christian album, Almost There quickly shot up to number one and eventually became certified double platinum. MercyMe is not just a flash in the pan though as they have continued to grow in popularity by producing 5 more studio albums. Only one of these has yet been certified as a gold album.
The Dove Awards, which are Christian and Gospel Music awards, have been good to MercyMe. They have won several different Dove Awards through the years for several of their different songs. In 2002, they won "Song of the Year", for "I Can Only Imagine." It took a few years before this song hit the mainstream market, but when it did it took off like a rocket, topping many billboard charts. Crashing on the scenes for adult contemporary music and country charts. The next album that they released, Spoken For, had two chart topping songs. They received three Dove Awards for this album.
The band finds their inspiration not from themselves, but the events and situations that God puts them in. Believing that there is no such thing as luck, the band has worked very hard to continue writing, "praise songs." As they believe that everything that comes out of our mouths should be praise.
In 2007, MercyMe released All That Is Within Me, an album that was released again later acoustically. The album contains 3 smash singles on it; "God With Us", "You Reign", and "Finally Home." Bart Millard, the lead worship artist wrote "Finally Home" to honor his father who had recently passed away.
MercyMe got their name from Millard's grandmother saying "Mercy me when will you ever get a real job?" Little did she know that she was inspiring him to find job song writing? MercyMe has been an inspiration to many and will continue for years to come.
